Gulf Coast Poker Championship
The Gulf Coast Poker Championship is currently being held at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi. This is one of the newest stops on the World Poker Tour, and like the World Poker Open held annually in Tunica, this tournament happens in our own backyard.
While the event has already started, it's not too late to get in on the action. Single-table satellites are running constantly. For those who bust out early from the daily events or simply want a cheaper option, there are separate second-chance tournaments nightly for a modest $175 + $25.

World Poker Open
I'm headed to the World Poker Open held annually at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, MS. I consider January to be a huge poker fest in Mississippi with both the World Poker Open and the World Series of Poker Circuit Event at the Grand Casino also in Tunica.
Best of luck to anyone traveling to the events!

Second London Poker Open Announced
In August 2005, the Welsh Wizard, Iwan Jones, captured the title of London Poker Open Champion at Old Billingsgate in the heart of London, fending off the likes of Chip Jett, Karina Jett and Willie Tann, to scoop the handsome winner's cheque of $750,000. Such was the success of that event and the surrounding activities, that the organisations behind the 2005 event have decided to repeat the trick and offer the Second Annual London Open in September 2006.
In a statement made from their headquarters in Antigua, The World Poker Exchange plans to partner with Autumn Light Media, L.L.C. to produce the second annual London Open poker tournament. It will be held this time at the Whitehall Palace, London, from 22nd to 27th September 2006. The Tournament Director will be Thomas Kremser, CEO of the International Poker Federation.
The World Poker Exchange London Open 2005 attracted 140 of the poker world's top players who competed for a guaranteed $2 million prize pool. Celebrities from both sides of the Atlantic also participated in the event, including Hollywood stars, Jennifer Tilly, Mimi Rogers and Willie Garson. This year, the $10,000 buy-in tournament is expected to draw 300 players, creating an estimated pool of $3 million, a 50% increase on 2005.

Tunica WSOP Circuit Event; Jack Binion World Poker Open
The World Series of Poker Circuit Event currently held in at the Grand Casino in Tunica, MS, is going fabulously. Saturday, I played in a $500 + $50 tournament that had the largest field of players in the history of the World Series of Poker Circuit. The tournament is still going strong. There's lots of action, whether you want to play in one of single table satellites running 24-hours a day, one of the major events, or just want a cash game.
If you want just a regular poker cash game, the best time to go is about four to five PM. By that time, the majority of the field of the day's main event has busted out, leaving more poker tables open and more players potentially on tilt.
If you want to try to get into the main tournaments cheaply, the best time catch single table satellite play is in the evenings after 6PM. I highly recommend avoiding the super satellite tournaments and sticking to the single table satellites. If you are able, buy into the $120 satellites instead of the $65. You get about $300 more in starting chips while the starting blinds remain the same. This means that your stack in relation to the blinds is greater and you have the ability to wait for decent hands. It feels less like a crap shoot and more like a legitimate no limit poker game.
And of course, if you're coming for one of the main events, come early. Especially for the lower buy-in tourneys (the lowest is $500 for a regular no-limit tournament and $300 for the women's tourney), you will want to either register the night before (if you're already at the casino) or come very early that morning. Otherwise you'll either wind up as an alternate (waiting to get a seat until someone busts out, which isn't too long of a wait, really) or you miss the tournament altogether.
The Tunica WSOP Circuit event will be lasting another week and a half or so. If you can't make it there that quickly, you can also play in the Jack Binion World Poker Open held at the GoldStrike and the Horseshoe in Tunica as well. The tournaments overlap in the middle with the World Poker Open lasting a couple weeks longer. While it is the WSOP Circuit's first year, the WPO is much older, and you can play in the ever popular World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel.
Best of luck, and if you're going to either the World Series of Poker Circuit Event or the World Poker Open in Tunica, leave me a comment or send me a message via our contact page. You may see me there!

Schedule
October 5th, Wednesday — Satellites begin
October 6th, Thursday — No Limit Hold 'Em, $300 + $40
October 7th, Friday — Limit Hold 'Em, $300 + $40
October 8th, Saturday — No Limit Hold 'Em, $1000 + $60
October 9th, Sunday — No Limit Hold 'Em, $500 + $50
October 10th, Monday — No Limit Hold 'Em with re-buys, $200 + $30
Of course, single table satellites will be running constantly from October 5th to October 10th.
There will also be $120 Mega Satellites for the $1000 + $60 event at 5PM every day from October 5th to October 7th. There are also other various mega and super satellites that I won't bother to type up unless I get a request for more information.

More Info, either use ChipNew's contact page or call Carole or Laura at 800-303-7463 ext. 5760

The Deal on the Past and Present Downtown LA Poker Circuit
Here's a little write-up of three of the downtown Los Angeles ongoing poker games.
The Downtown poker game is not a new tradition, however. We talked to host emeritus Jim Fittipaldi, who reflected on his Arts District game that ran from 1993 to 1998. Though he no longer hosts games (he's a gallerist now, a whole other kind of gamble), his poker nights still shine brightly in Downtown card players' memories.
These days there are countless games hitting local green felt. We looked at three in different parts of Downtown: a hip little house in Chavez Ravine, a rotating circuit of lofts in a Spring Street residential building; and the Brewery artist colony.

Small-Scale North Carolina Free Tournament
Well, it's mostly free. You pay a $5 membership per year and the tournaments, which happen twice a week, are free. The total prize is $100.
I'm sorry, I don't know city name or the area code, but if you live in North Carolina, I'm sure you can figure it out.
Twice a week, the balls are cleared off the pool tables at Gator's Sports Pub.
People pull up chairs and rest their forearms on the rails. They set their beers in the corner pockets, and they play cards.
They're lured in by the possibility of winning $100.
Gator's started hosting Texas Hold 'Em poker competitions about 10 weeks ago. To play, participants must preregister and be Gator's members, which costs $5 a year. Admission to the tournaments is free, a necessity to comply with state anti-gambling laws, said pub co-owner Linda Long.
For more information, call 212-5100.

Charity Poker Opportunity in Florida and Smoke Free Card Rooms
A no limit Texas hold'em tournament with a top prize of $5,000 and a chance to play in the World Series of Poker will be held March 22 at the Ocala Hilton. The tournament is jointly sponsored by The National Association of Two-Year-Old Consignors and The Race for Education.
More Poker Rooms Going Smoke-Free
Palace Station, along with Station Casinos Inc. sister properties Santa Fe Station and Texas Station, this year started following a trend that began in earnest in 2001 when poker rooms at the Mirage and Bellagio resorts banned smoking.
Since then, nearly every major poker room on the Strip has quietly gone smoke-free. Others including the Flamingo, Gold Coast and Aladdin have followed suit in recent months.
A few poker rooms like those at the Luxor and Sahara went smokeless when they decided to expand. In another sign that nonsmoking rooms aren't hurting business, others such as the Bellagio and Bally's are expanding already smoke-free rooms.

Pre-SuperBowl Poker and New Mexico Opportunity
Chip News Note - I've already set my TiVo to record this, just in case I miss the it while getting ready for SuperBowl festivities. Also, if you live in New Mexico, you may be interested in attending the grand opening of Route 66's 12-table poker room and seeing guest pro Jennifer Harman.
Following football, NBC Sports will present an unprecedented poker challenge, the inaugural "Poker Superstars Championship," the grand finale of the all professional, invitation-only poker tournament, in which the winner will walk away with $1 million, at 4 p.m. ET. The tournament offers the largest-ever poker pot on network television.
Eight elite professionals – Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, T.J. Cloutier, Barry Greenstein, Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer and Chip Reese – posted $400,000, a record high buy-in, to compete against their top peers in a game of No Limit Texas Hold 'Em for a total purse of $3.2 million. Collectively, this group has more combined wins, earnings and notoriety than any other group of players in the history of poker. Their combined poker earnings top $100 million.

Jack Binion WPO Schedule
Alright, things are hoppin' down in the Horseshoe poker rooms, but I finally got a hold of a live person, Dale, to help me. He gave me the schedule over the phone and details, and I'm here to pass them on to you.
This is the last week of the tournament, and all on-site hotel rooms are booked up, but the administration is working constantly to get people rooms at the other hotels and arrange shuttle access.
Here is the normal event schedule, but I wanted to post in big bold print that there are low buy-in satellites running constantly on the Gold Strike casino floor to qualify for the WPO final. They're running single table and multi-table options constantly, so go show up. Now, I tell you! You don't need to pre-register or anything. Just show up, sign up for the next satellite, and play. This is what I'm planning to do if I can get up there.
Now for the rest of the schedule, which takes place at the Horseshoe.
18th (today) - Pot Limit Hold 'Em - $2000 buy-in
19th (Wed) - Limit Hold 'Em - $1500
20th (Thurs) - No Limit Hold 'Em - $2000
21st (Fri) - Limit Hold 'Em - $3000
22nd (Sat) - No Limit Hold 'Em - $3000
23rd (Sun) - Ladies Limit Tournament - $200 + $25 registration fee
24th (Mon) - No Limit World Poker Open Final (the big WPT event) - $10,000
I don't know the start times; I'm sorry. If any of this information is inaccurate, I apologize for the conversation I had with Dale took place on the loud poker room floor. Call 1-800-303-SHOE (7463) or go to the Horseshoe Tunica website if you need help or Contact me if you have any questions or plan to attend.

Binion World Poker Open is This Week!
I wish I had posted this sooner, but it snuck up on me before I realized. This week is the Jack Binion World Poker Open at the Horseshoe and GoldStrike Casinos in Tunica, Mississippi. This is one of the major stops on the World Poker Tour, but not many people realize that Tunica stop has more poker games than just the WPT $10,000 buy-in game.
Last year I played in the Women's Limit Tournament and came in 39th. I had a blast and it was my first casino-based, large-scale poker tournament. The game had doubled in size from previous years.
I'm trying to get a hold of a schedule right now (and when I do, I'll be posting it here), but very few people know that they have very inexpensive satellite tournaments (20-100 bucks) for the big WPT entry as well as dozens of mid-range buy-in (200-1000 dollars) tournaments that any joe can walk up, register and play.
So, just because you can't afford to play on the 10k scale doesn't mean that there isn't a tournament more suited to you this week at the Jack Binion World Poker Open.
Contact me if you have any questions or if you plan to be there yourself. You may see me there!

Burlington, Vermont, Wins With Poker Players
In an internet poll, more people from Burlington, Vermont, nominated their town to host the first stop on the Small Town Poker Tour; the other top two were Hampton Roads, Virginia, and Tauton, Mass. "We were surprised at the amount of interest from the state of Vermont," stated Mark Fracalossi, Executive Producer of the Tour. "I know there are many civic-minded people in Vermont and a few I spoke to stated how they wanted to give to the community in a unique way."
The Small Town Poker Tour is the first Charity Poker Tour to travel the country in search of the best amateur poker player in America. The tour will travel all 50 United States. You can nominate a town by visiting www.smalltownpokertour.com. The Tour donates 100% of the money to charity. The tour works with local charities: when you sign up to play, you pick a charity to play for and the top three finishers' charities are paid. The top three players are that state's Small Town Poker Tour Champs.
"We want to make this the finest traveling fund raiser in the world," Fracalossi said. The Tour will be filmed for television, with production duties going to Make It Happen Productions of Los Angeles. A European Tour is set for the spring of 2005.
Any local charities are urged to contact the tour. The times and dates of the stop will be announced soon. "Our Team will be visiting Burlington the next few weeks, looking at a few sites and meeting with local charities and officials," Fracalossi said.

Dispelling the Mysteries of Online Poker
No matter what poker website you choose, the actual playing environment is pretty much the same. You'll have a listing of different poker tables grouped according to their betting limits. Tournaments and free tables will usually be found among these same listings. Once you choose a table, you'll select a seat at the table, represented by avatars. When you pick a table, you'll be prompted for the amount of money to bring to the table. If it's your first time, bring only the minimum amount that the table requires. Once you're more comfortable, you might want to start playing with three to four times that minimum amount.
